How Anti-Drone Net Gun Works?

An anti‑drone net gun is a non‑lethal launcher that fires a weighted net to physically entangle a drone in the air, stalling its propellers and forcing it to descend or crash in a controlled way. Unlike RF “jamming guns” that emit electromagnetic signals, a net gun uses a mechanical projectile, so it can work even against drones that are resistant to radio interference.

It powered by CO₂, compressed air, or a pyrotechnic blank charge that launches a folded net toward the target.Many models are designed specifically for security forces, police, or military to intercept small quadcopters and FPV drones within a short range (typically 20–50 m).

There are also drone‑mounted net guns, where an interceptor drone carries a net‑launch module to capture another drone mid‑air. In all cases the core idea is the same: catch, not destroy, so debris and collateral damage are minimized.

Most net guns follow a similar sequence:

  1. Loading
    A net cartridge containing a tightly folded net and four small weights at the corners is inserted into the front of the device. A power pack (CO₂ capsule, compressed‑air tank, or pyrotechnic cartridge) is fitted in the rear or grip, providing the pressure for the shot.
  2. Aiming and firing
    The operator arms the safety, aims using iron sights or a red‑dot, and pulls the trigger when the drone is within effective range (often 20–30 m for handheld systems, up to ~50 m for high‑end units). The propellant instantly pushes the corner weights out of the barrel; as the weights fly forward, they drag the folded net, unfolding it into a wide “sheet” in the air.
  3. Capture and descent
    When the expanded net hits the drone, the weights swing around, wrapping the net around the rotors and frame. The propellers jam, the motors stall, and the drone loses lift, causing it to descend or fall—often in a relatively controlled way compared with shooting it down.

 

Some systems keep the captured drone tethered to the launcher with a cable so it can be lowered to a safe spot and recovered for forensics. Others simply let it fall once entangled, relying on the net to absorb impact and prevent hard fragmentation.

Ground vs air‑mounted net guns

Both approaches aim to remain non‑explosive and non‑radio‑emitting, which is useful near airports, nuclear plants, or dense urban events where jamming or kinetic weapons could be dangerous.

Ground/handheld net guns

Used by guards, police, or soldiers to protect specific perimeters (stadiums, prisons, VIP events, bases). Quick to deploy, but limited by line of sight and short range; the drone must come relatively close.

Interceptor‑drone net guns

A “hunter” drone tracks the intruder and fires a net at close range, often above crowds or sensitive infrastructure, bypassing terrain limitations and chasing targets that stay outside handheld net‑gun range.

Limitations and practical trade‑offs

Despite the hype, net guns have real constraints:

  • Short effective range: Most handheld net guns work within 20–50 m, so drones flying high or fast can stay out of reach.

  • Operator skill and timing: You need accurate aiming and good timing as the drone approaches; there is usually just a small “window” to fire.

  • Target size and speed: They are best against small quadcopters or mini FPV drones; larger fixed‑wing or very fast racing drones are much harder to catch reliably.

  • Reload and capacity: After each shot, the cartridge and power pack must be replaced, so sustained multi‑drone attacks can overwhelm a single operator.

Because of these limitations, experts typically recommend net guns as part of a layered counter‑UAS system, complementing detection, RF jamming, geofencing and other kinetic or directed‑energy measures, rather than serving as the only defense.
