- Small commercial drones have become the preferred tool for smuggling contraband into prisons. Factory-fresh drones come with geofencing data baked into the firmware—they detect if they’re inside prison coordinates and simply refuse to take off or auto-hover to stay out. But DIY FPV racers and custom drones often skip this restriction, giving operators plenty of room to maneuver. That said, they still can’t escape their reliance on radio spectrum and satellite navigation.
The prison’s high walls force FPV pilots to operate from farther away, and the sheer number of walls in the compound makes signal attenuation almost inevitable. This creates a perfect window for spectrum detection and jamming—especially since the pilot’s handheld transmitter is itself broadcasting radio signals. At this point, pinpointing the pilot’s location becomes critical: apprehend the operator, and you secure far more valuable evidence of the crime.
